Join Seattle IPA on Friday, March 12 as we attend Stations of the Cross at Sacred Heart Parish near Seattle Center to remember and re-live the events of the final stage of Christ's earthly journey.
As Pope John Paul II said in his meditations on the Stations on Good Friday in 2000, "We are here because we are convinced that the Way of the Cross of the Son of God was not simply a journey to the place of execution. We believe that every step of the Condemned Christ, every action and every word, as well as everything felt and done by those who took part in this tragic drama, continues to speak to us. In his suffering and death too, Christ reveals to us the truth about God and man."
Afterward (around 7:30), we'll head to Ivar's Acres of Clams restaurant on the Waterfront (Happy Hour! Half off appetizers! Fish!). We'll try to make a reservation beforehand, so be sure to respond via our Facebook event if you plan on coming. And BRING CASH so we can attempt to dilute the bill-paying chaos.

Gentlemen of Seattle, the Lenten Beard Challenge has begun!

Put down that razor! St. Clement of Alexandria may have said it best: It is not lawful to pluck out the beard, man's natural and noble adornment.
During Lent this year, we would like to invite the men of Seattle IPA to give up shaving along with your personal Lenten sacrifices.
In common iconography and other art, Christ often is presented with a beard during his ministry on earth and after his ascension, he is clean shaven. And historically, beards were only trimmed as penance or during times of mourning.
So, the idea: give up shaving until Good Friday then submit a photo for a friendly competition/fundraiser. We will hold an event after Easter where guests can make donations to vote for their favorite beard. All proceeds will go toward Catholic Relief Services work in Haiti.
Feel free to post photos of your progress on IPA's Facebook page, and good luck!
Catholic Mating Identification Day
According to the book "The Bad Catholic's Guide to Good Living", Ash Wednesday is better known as Catholic Mating Identification Day... here's more explanation:
Maybe you can take a moment away from your fasting to bake some of their "Here's my number, I think you're kind of hot" Cross Buns. They say "they're a light way to break the ice with a total stranger to whom you're attracted, and about whom you know nothing more than that he will someday return to dust."
Now, go get your ashes and good luck on your Lenten fasting.
To mark the onset of penance, the Church distributes ashes to Catholics, which are rubbed on the forehead with the timeless warning "Remember, man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return." This ceremony is so vivid that it has the power to draw people to church who almost never otherwise attend. (So Catholics like free samples--what's wrong with that? See you on Palm Sunday!).... It's also a handy way for single Catholics to spot each other and meet. For one day a year, that cute intern you've been eyeing in the elevator, the distinguished executive who doesn't have a wedding ring, the pink-faced Polish waitress or Irish construction worker, walks around all day with a sticker on his or her head that says "Marriage Material."... So if you're a single Catholic, take full advantage of the solemn fast we like to call "Mating Identification Day" by making a point of meeting those unhitched papists you've been ogling all year.

Haiti Earthquake Response
A letter from Catholic Releif Services:
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, with Catholic Relief Services( CRS), today issued a request for dioceses and parishes to respond to the desperate situation in Haiti after the January 12 earthquake in that island nation.
CRS has made an initial commitment of 5 million dollars for immediate use in the relief effort. The agency is geared up for a major emergency response to this severe disaster. CRS is mobilizing food and gearing up our emergency capacity, and deploying prepositioned emergency shelter and hygiene kits in Haiti, as well as bringing supplies in from the neighboring Dominican Republic. Karel Zelenka, CRS Country Representative in Haiti: “I’ve been in earthquakes before. This was a major hit. And it was direct. Thousands must be dead.”
Thank you for your faithful solidarity with the people of Haiti in their time of need.

Prayer
God of all creation, as we weep with our family in Haiti, console us.
In this time of crisis, open our eyes to look beyond the disaster
to see Christ in our brothers and sisters in Haiti, as Christ sees us.
Be with us as we stand in solidarity with those living and working in Haiti.
Be with us in our mourning and guide our efforts to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, comfort the grieving and stand for justice.
With your mercy, sustain us at this time as we continue to work for peace and justice.
Amen.
For our Brothers and Sisters in Haiti Affected by the Earthquake
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the Haitian people, that help comes to them quickly and comfort comes to those who hurt.
Lord, hear our prayer.
For the lost or buried, that they are found and reunited with their loved ones.
Lord, hear our prayers.
For the relief workers, that they have the tools they need, the courage and the strength to respond fully.
Lord, hear our prayers.
For the families in Haiti and in the United States who are waiting to hear from loved ones, that good news comes to them.
Lord, hear our prayers.
For those whose who have perished, may their souls rest with you, oh Lord, where they will find eternal love.
Amen.
To Help
Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the official international humanitarian agency of the U.S. Catholic Church, is responding to victims of the massive earthquake in Haiti. To donate, please call 1-877-HELP-CRS, donate online at www.crs.org or send a check to CRS/Archdiocese of Seattle, 710 9th Ave, Seattle WA 98104 (on the memo line, please write: Haiti Earthquake). Thank you.
We would like to encourage all of you who participate in Seattle IPA to pray for the victims and their families of the Haiti earthquake and make a donation if possible. Also, visit St. James Cathedral:
A Place of Prayer for the victims of the earthquake has been established in the Cathedral’s Chapel at the image of Mary known as Our Lady of Seattle. This 19th century statue was shipped from Italy around the horn of South America to Seattle via the Caribbean.
A special ecumenical prayer service will be held in the Cathedral on Friday, January 15th at 6:30 pm. This service of songs from Taize will include prayers and readings.
